Someone (a previous boss or reliable adult that knows you) who can tell what a great person you are and if you're a good worker. That sort of thing.

If you've had a job before or did volunteer work, use co-workers and bosses. If not, teachers and coaches would be OK. If you go to church, a youth worker or the pastor can be a good reference for your character.

If this is a college application form, then definitely use teachers first, then co-workers.

Pretty much someone who is willing to vouch for you. I mostly used people that I had volunteered for when I started out job searching, but you can use almost anyone -- Heads of any clubs your in, your pastor, your teachers, etc.. pretty much anyone (who isn't family) who knows you and will have some insight into how well you will perform as an employee.

Usually yes, just to be polite. These people will want to know why the application person is calling them. Just ask them if they will be a reference for you. Most people will say yes. Depending on what you are applying for, a nice letter of recommendation goes a long way too.

Don't bother, you will not get the job if you are interviewed.

One tip about a referance: MAKE SURE THE PEOPLE KNOW THEY'RE REFERANCED! And make sure its someone who can say good things about you. I've screwed up before and asked my professor to be a referance. He said he'd glady help out. The smug jerk said I had a problem being on time >.> Didn't get the job.
